Twelve Ways to Morph Your Mindset And Your Business

One of the easiest ways to communicate relatable information is by telling a story. Over the next twelve issues, I’ll discuss one of my recent business trips. I’ll then relate each phase of the journey in building my accounting practice.

I’ve written about living and working abroad more than once. You can find a couple of those articles here:

Last month, I realized I needed to travel back to the states. The first thing I had to decide was my destination.  I’ll be in the states for a couple of months. I chose Cleveland as my destination.  It’s my home base and it’s where I planned the rest of my travels.

This holds true for business as well. There will come a time when facing your fears is a must. Leaving my employer and a steady paycheck was a bit scary. But I knew it was the right decision. I had to be specific in what I wanted. Defining my business goals was vital.

For more years than I can count, I’ve spoken with colleagues about this very thing. I was curious if they had an objective when they started their firms. Most had little to no idea of what they wanted from their practice. When I reflect a bit on the number, I’d guess about 9 out of 10. That means that only one of every ten of my colleagues knew what they wanted from their business.

Here’s an interesting fact: The Global Wealth Report by Credit Suisse shows more than eight percent of Americans are millionaires.  There may very well be a correlation between those with a definite objective and their net worth. Last year, during a global pandemic, our firm had its best year.

It wasn’t by happenstance. We have the clarity of our mission. We have a plan for its execution. Next issue I’ll detail our plans. Step Two is planning.
